You are in the airplane, and the lady next to you wants to chat. However, she only speaks the language you are learning/want to learn. How would you react?
I can’t speak with her nor understand her, so I smile nicely while she speaks.
I’m only able to tell her very basic information about myself (name, age, country of origin).
I can introduce myself in a simple way and ask her to do the same.
I can have a small talk with her.
You arrive at the hotel and have nothing to eat, so you decide to buy some food at the supermarket. How would you ask for apples?
Only with gestures, pointing at the apples.
"Two apples, please."
"Hello! I want two apples, please."
"Hello! Can I have two apples, please? Thank you! How much is it?”
You go to a restaurant to try the local food. How would the visit to the restaurant be for you?
I would only communicate with gestures, as I can’t say a word in the local language.
I would only point to the menu, and say basic words like: 'beer' , 'water', 'toilets', 'pay'.’
I would be able to order in a simple way in the local language: “I want water, please.”
I would be capable of ordering, complaining if necessary, asking for the bill.
You are lost, and need help finding some places that you would like to visit. How would you do it?
I can only point at the map, showing where I want to go.
I point at the map, saying keywords like: ‘where?’, ‘park’, ‘museum’, ‘pharmacy'.
I can ask for directions in a simple way: “Where is the park/museum/pharmacy?”
I can independently ask for directions: “Excuse me, how do I get to the museum? Thank you!”
What do you expect to get from the SPEAK experience?
I need to start learning the language from scratch (alphabet, basic vocabulary, etc.)
I know the very basics (alphabet, how to introduce yourself, etc.) of the language I’m applying for, and I need to learn more basic vocabulary, grammar and common sentence structures.
I’m familiar with basic vocabulary and common verbs (‘to be’, ‘to do’, ‘to have’) and want to be able to have simple day-to-day conversations.
I can already have simple conversations in the target language, so I want to boost my confidence when talking with native speakers and expand my vocabulary and conversational skills.
